If you’re visiting Guatemala, you must explore one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. It’s not just about experiencing a natural wonder; it’s about understanding that the Maya people didn’t disappear—they continue to live and preserve their languages, traditions, cuisine, and clothing. And you’ll witness all of this in the Lake Atitlan area.

Surrounded by several Maya villages, Lake Atitlan is where the contemporary Maya people thrive.

We will pick you up at 5 am from your hotel in Guatemala City and embark on a 3-hour drive to Panajachel. During the journey, we’ll make a stopover for a meal and perhaps browse for handicrafts or souvenirs to take back home.

Upon arrival in Panajachel, we will start our boat tour, visiting two villages: Santiago and San Juan.

In Santiago, we will stroll through the town and encounter the Mayan folk figure of Maximon or San Simon saint. We’ll have the opportunity to take a picture with one of the beautiful elder women who reside in this village and visit the church to gain insight into how Catholicism and Mayan traditions coexist.

We will then hop back on the boat and head towards San Juan, where we’ll be greeted by incredible murals and visit the women’s cooperative that produces textiles.

After exploring San Juan, we will return to Panajachel, where you’ll have some free time before we drive back to your hotel in Guatemala City.
