Join us on an exhilarating 4X4 off-road ride to the magnificent Volcán Acatenango. Departing from the Old Town Outfitters Shop, we’ll kickstart our adrenaline-filled journey at 12:00PM. As we leave Antigua behind, we’ll drive through neighboring towns, offering a glimpse into the authentic local life.

After transitioning from concrete to dirt roads, we’ll arrive at the entrance of a farm nestled at the base of Volcán Acatenango. Brace yourself as we navigate the challenging maze of farmland and forest, conquering hills that will test our limits.

While enjoying breathtaking views along the way, this alternative route cuts down the typical hike time by 3½ hours, making our ascent to the summit easier and leaving us with ample spare time. At an elevation of 11,483 feet (3,500 meters), we’ll leave our car behind and prepare for an unforgettable experience.

Day 1: Hike to Camp

With our hiking shoes tightly laced, we’ll embark on a moderate trail along Acatenango’s ridge, meandering through temperate coniferous and tropical dry forests. The unique forest, shaped by a past forest fire, boasts striking petrified trees. As we traverse the trail, we’ll be rewarded with views of Volcán Agua towering over the Antigua valley, while catching our first glimpses of the mesmerizingly active Volcán Fuego.

Our campsite, nestled below the tree line, offers sweeping vistas of the Antigua valley and Volcán Fuego. After setting up camp, take a moment to unwind and immerse yourself in the stunning surroundings. Our knowledgeable guide will prepare a hearty camp dinner with hot drinks at 12,303 feet (3,750 meters). Weather permitting, we may even gather around a campfire, eagerly awaiting a high-altitude fireworks show from Fuego.

Day 2: Summiting Acatenango

Rise and shine! After a satisfying camp breakfast, we embark on a challenging one-hour ascent to the summit. The trail is steep, adorned with sand, gravel, dwarf pine trees, and alpine mosses. As we conquer the summit, brace yourself for sweeping 360-degree views of the Guatemalan highlands, extending all the way to the Mexican border. Take a moment to soak in the awe-inspiring panorama and reflect on our incredible journey.

Once we’ve savored the summit experience, we begin our descent back to our car, a little over an hour-long trek. Get ready for more thrilling 4X4 adventure as we navigate the steep road downwards. We’ll arrive back in Antigua by mid-day, around 12:00PM, leaving you with plenty of time to explore the charms of this old Spanish colonial capital.
